Robert Goodnough (1917-2010) was an Abstract Expressionist painter. Although he never achieved the commercial success of his contemporaries Pollock, Motherwell, and Kline, he is recognized as a significant artist whose works are part of major museum collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In a career that lasted more than half a century, Goodnough eluded the neat categories that art critics relied on to codify the work of Abstract Expressionists. His stylistic evolution from vibrant, Cubist-inspired abstractions to Color Field canvases made him one of the least definable members of second generation Abstract Expressionists.
