James Hilleary (1924-2014) was born in Washington, DC and worked throughout his career as an architect and a painter. His works quickly became some of the most important of the early Washington Color School. Hilleary focused on vibrant colors with clean, clear lines. He is best known for his commitment to creating harmonious, expertly executed canvases in variations of a signature style. Hilleary’s work was exhibited around the country and at numerous galleries including Henri Gallery, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Studio Gallery and the University of Maryland. In 2003, there was a four-decade retrospective exhibit of his work.
